Overview
Title: Retrieval Practice in the Maths Classroom: Supporting Learning Before and After New Topics

About: In this session, teachers will explore how purposeful retrieval practice can be used both to strengthen prior learning and to prime students for upcoming concepts in Maths. The focus is firmly on practical application, with examples that can be easily integrated into existing schemes of work. The session will highlight how retrieval practice can support fluency, connections across topics and readiness to learn new material without adding pressure or extra assessment.

Eoghan is a Maths teacher in Davis College, Mallow and former committee member of the IMTA Cork Branch and looking for help from Maths teachers in completing a brief questionnaire below. He is part of a team of researchers from University College Cork that are currently conducting a study investigating the purpose and frequency of Maths teachers’ use of various classroom student learning activities in their teaching, their views on the importance of different aspects of student learning, and teachers’ opinions on particular scenarios from experimental research practice.

Eoghan is the Principal Investigator on this study and the team have worked closely with teachers in developing the questionnaire to try to ensure that it is relevant and will provide beneficial results to teachers’ classroom practice. If you are currently teaching secondary mathematics, and you have not already done so, we would really appreciate you taking the time to complete the online questionnaire. It should take approximately15 minutes to complete and can be found at the following link:

Please feel free to share the questionnaire with any interested colleagues that are currently teaching mathematics in secondary settings.
